The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine is seeking a Lead Laboratory Research Specialistto provide guidance and technical expertise to research project(s) and oversee the laboratory(s) research activities in the Department of Pathology Research. This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities.

Performs waived, moderate and high complexity testing using manual and automated processes. Complies with all regulatory agency guidelines (CLIA 88, TJC, CAP, FDA, etc.) and addresses concerns as needed.
Lead the development and execution of project research studies. Revise studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.
Identifies, resolves problems and takes corrective action in evaluating testing procedures, patient results and specimen integrity.
Prepares reagents and controls, preps samples for further testing (e.g. embedding, extractions, staining, etc.).
Independently identifies and resolves analytical problems, troubleshoots equipment issues, and evaluates specimen integrity.
Interprets and records testing and quality control results. Integrates various lab processes such as operating instrumentation, resolving customer issues, documenting QC as needed and finalizing results.
Accountable for orientation (e.g. assignments, goal setting, communication of needs, attending required orientation meetings, etc.)
Reviews Quality Control and determines the acceptability of testing, patient results, and instrument function by applying the principles of QA/QC daily.
Performs directorial duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; develops policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education:Bachelor's degree, in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience:Five (5) years of related experience with three (3) years clinical laboratory testing experience.
*Preferred: *Certification in clinical laboratory testing is preferred.

- Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the laboratory, or Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research laboratory. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Skill in programming statistical and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and dismantles and repair equipment.
Design research studies and prepare technical procedures and reports.
Knowledge and assurance of compliance issues related to laboratory activities.
