The Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR)/Department of Anesthesiology Researchat the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine is searching for aLaboratory Research*Specialist. *This individual will be responsible for performing research activities in a highly collaborative environment to achieve research project goals by designing studies, performing laboratory experiments, analyzing data, writing reports, presenting results, and training staff and students. The goals of the Department of Anesthesiology Research Laboratory are to conduction federal funded state-of–the-art research projects in the areas of brain ischemia and hemorrhagic shock.

*Essential Functions:*

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.

Independently perform laboratory research activities such as generating genetic animal models, quantitative PCR (qPCR) and immunoblot analysis; interpret research data using the PCR and immunoblot for the neuronal cell death and neuroinflammation outcomes; perfusion/fixation of rodent brains; cryostat sectioning and staining for characterization of lesion volume, neuronal loss and microglia activation in the cortex and hippocampus; sample preparation for qPCR and immunoblot analysis of in vivo and in vitro experiments; and cultures and specimens.

Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Maintain proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning, ordering of required components and explaining/resolving technical issues.

Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. Presents research findings.

Prepare materials for research studies, including sample collection kits and research documents.

Assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral, international fellows, and/or junior technical personnel in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in research specialization.

Other: Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.

May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

**Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the laboratory, or Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research laboratory.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Ability to perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty. Ability to design and recommend changes to research projects and/or area of technical specialty.

Skill in interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet software applications. Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform simple equipment repairs. Ability to conduct library research and participate in the preparation of journal articles.

Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts and to understand and utilize relevant scientific/medical terminology and research theory. Writes and presents information in a clear and concise way. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.

Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with other to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up with customers.
