Applied Physics Laboratory Electronic Warfare Systems Engineer in Laurel, Maryland

Position Description

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Electronic Warfare Systems Engineer.

*Job Summary: *Provide test engineering support and system test expertise to develop and test technologies in support of ground based electronic warfare. Lead test and evaluation operations both in the laboratory and off-site locations, including operations on existing government ranges and facilities.

Duties*:*

  1. Lead efforts related to effective operational deployment of Ground Electronic Attack (GEA) systems against a variety of threat types and missions. This includes but is not limited to technique development, technique optimization, selection of hardware to meet specific requirements, development of tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) and discussions on current gaps and challenges facing the existing systems. (25%)

  2. Support the Program and Project Manager during sponsor and subcontractor engagement by providing subject matter expertise on GEA threats, GEA systems capabilities and GEA system upgrades and future growth strategies. (20%)

  3. In coordination with the Project Manager, track, review and document subcontractor deliverables. This would include providing technical expertise during proposal development and conducting technical evaluations of subcontractor proposals (10%)

  4. Provide technical expertise during field and laboratory test and evaluation events. This includes having a thorough knowledge of the GEA system under test, the threats being used during the test, common test infrastructure configurations and test instrumentation (25%)

  5. Be familiar with and guide other team members in the application of systems engineering and test design consistent with government standards and practices for development, evaluation and sustainment of RF systems. (20%)

Qualifications

*Required Qualifications: *BS degree in engineering, physics or related field and 5+ years of relevant test engineering experience. Specific experience with test design, planning, execution and test reporting of RF electronic warfare systems. In-depth understanding of military operations and deployment of ground based electronic warfare systems. Ability to understand technical discussions and conceptualize test requirements and objectives. Requires architectural level understanding of the various lab instruments (e.g. RSA, Scope, Network Generator, etc.). Must possess excellent inter-personal skills and be able to effectively interact with sponsors, management and working group team members in a fast paced environment. Capable of evaluating, planning and executing component and system level test during various stages of development, from concept development to operational deployment. Must have demonstrated strong verbal and writing skills. Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to effectively use MatLab, Microsoft Office, Word, Power Point and Excel. Ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

*Desired Qualifications: *MS degree in engineering, physics or related field. Five plus years of experience with communication system countermeasures system development and test. Sound understanding of RF test and design, propagation, antenna design, microcontroller design, common communication protocols, and electronic attack techniques. Experience with and technical understanding of electronic warfare. Familiarity with currently deployed GEA systems. Working knowledge of commercial and military communications systems. Experience in evaluating, planning and executing developmental and operational test events. Active Secret clearance.

Special Working Conditions: Position will require approximately 10% local and out of town travel to government and contractor facilities and special test ranges.

Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
